All you wanted to know about retro dressing like Destiny's Child

The members of Destiny’s Child have changed so many times we’re not even sure we can count that on our fingers. Of course, we all know Beyonce is the OG child of Destiny (obvs), but then we’ve had Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, LeToya Luckett, LaTavia Roberson, and even Farrah Franklin. It’s all got a bit too confusing for us. Unfortunately, Destiny’s Child didn’t make it any easier for us when they walked the red carpet, either. Their matchy-matchy outfits left us all scratching our heads, and trying to lift our jaws off the floor because we also loved it so much…

Feeling a little patriotic

In 2001, Destiny’s Child attended Michael Jackson’s 30th Anniversary Celebration – and if you’re getting ready for a 4th July party, you should definitely take a leaf out of their book. That day, the ladies were obviously feeling a little patriotic and wanted to pledge their allegiance to the flag with their star-spangled pants. Wearing the same pants as your friends is one of the best ways to showcase your allegiance to your squad, but you have to mix it up a little bit. In this instance, Bey and the girls decided to wear different colored shirts to break up the similarities. Man, they were so clever.

All black, errrything

Let’s be honest; black is one of the most flattering colors you could ever find on the color wheel. Sure, it might not be the brightest color in existence, but if it makes you look fly why would you not wear it? Destiny’s Child knew what the deal was through their time as a band, as these ladies would regularly don black outfits to red carpet events. This immediately tied the women together, but they all added their own little flair to their outfits. Beyonce would add a little hat and some huge hoops into the mix, Kelly Rowland would wear a skirt and thigh-high boots instead of leather pants, and Michelle would wear a leather jacket to top off the look. It’s all about the details.

Double denim

Over the years, we realized that Destiny’s Child were a huge fan of denim. After all, it was the ‘90s! Although they all liked to match on stage, the ladies would change up their outfits slightly so we could (attempt to) tell them apart. During MTV’s Spring Break in 2000, these ladies all wore light-washed denim pants and skirts and topped the whole outfit off with a red top. There might have been a cami top, a bikini, or even a bandana top. They all added their own little touches that suited their own personalities.

All about the neckline

In 2000, Destiny’s Child attended the 2000 VH1 Vogue Fashion Awards in a gold sequined dress that required those in the vicinity to wear sunglasses. Despite the fact that their dresses were basically identical, they were also incredibly different. All three of the women were wearing different necklines that set them apart. There was a deep scoop, a round-neck, and even a dress that was off the shoulder. It’s easy to match your outfits with your squad, but you have to make sure you keep your own originality. You’ve got to be Beyonce, after all.
If you’re looking to take your friendship to the next level, you’ve just got to take a page from Destiny’s Child and start matching your outfits. However, it’s also important that you don’t lose your own identity. You gotta be unique, y’all.
