The benefits of keeping a dream journal

Dreams are weird, am I right? Even when you’re busy getting your eight hours of Z’s a night, your brain is still fluttering around and providing us with in-flight entertainment – that isn’t always that entertaining. From regular old dreams where you buy a pint of milk from the corner store to a horrendous nightmare that wakes you up in all kinds of panic, you have absolutely no control over your dreams or what they show you. In fact, by the time you’ve woken up and wiped the sweat off your forehead you’ve probably forgotten what the dream was all about! This is why it’s probably best that you invest in a dream journal…

Unpicking your dreams is worthwhile

Although dreams may seem incredibly random, they are actually just your brain’s way of processing what happened during your day to understand it better. You can use this to your advantage if you keep a dream journal. If you write down your dream as soon as you wake up, you can spend time to actually unpick why such themes and people came into your dreams, and understand why they occurred in the first place. By doing this, you will automatically reinforce the fact that your dreams are important to your brain. In fact, many studies note that this makes your dreams become more beneficial and more educational the more you unpick them.

The benefits of keeping a dream journal

You can overcome your own anxieties

One of the main reasons why have nightmares is because our brain is trying to cope with the anxiety and fear we have in our brains. Thankfully, everyone over the course of their lifetime will have nightmares, which means you’re not alone. Even rats have been known to have nightmares! Yet, by writing down your dreams and nightmares in a journal, you will be able to bring these insecurities and your anxiety to light. It may be that these are unconscious anxieties, or they may hold a deeper meaning to you, but knowing what they are is the best way to overcome them.

You can become more spiritually aware

The idea of a dream journal is not a new one. It’s actually been around since the dawn of the Ancient Egyptians! This is because these guys thought their dreams were actually messages from above and was the result of Gods and relatives imparting wisdom onto them. Because of this, they wrote down all of their dreams to make a note of this wisdom – but they’re not the only ones who think this one. Throughout history, religious leaders and spiritual people have associated dreams with spiritual messages that make people much more spiritually aware of themselves and their surroundings.

They can increase your creativity

Sometimes you may be surprised as to how weird and wonderful your dreams are, and you may wonder where the heck all of this information came from. After all, it’s in your mind. Yet, many people believe that writing down their dreams in a journal makes them much more creative, as they learn to express these thoughts and experiences in the real world. Amazingly, Paul McCartney claims that the famous Beatles song, “Yesterday” actually first came to light through a dream! It wasn’t until he wrote it down afterward that he realized he had written it unconsciously.
There are some people who swear that they don’t dream, but if you’re the kind of person who does dream regularly and remembers their dreams, it may be an idea to write these down in a dream journal.
