Things you must do when visiting Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of the most famous city destinations worldwide, and for good reason too. With its rich history and vibrant cultural scene, it’s impossible to run out of things to do here. This city holds experiences that you will not find elsewhere, so here’s a list of the things you must do when visiting Amsterdam:

Take a Canal Cruise

Amsterdam has the most picturesque canal network in the world, it would be a crime to not take a ride while visiting. This canal belt is likely the first thing to come to mind when you think of the city, so do not hesitate to experience it. Built in the 17h century, this network keeps the sea at bay, and it’s UNESCO protected. At night, catch the breathtaking sights when the bridges are lit up in fairy lights, giving the entire place a magical feel. There’s so much to learn about the city and local traditions while you cruise down these canals, so this will also be part of discovering Amsterdam’s culture too.

See the Anne Frank House

A visit to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a visit to what used to be Anne Frank’s house. Anne Frank kept a diary about how she and her family hid in the house for two years during the second world war, in fear of the Nazis after freeing the persecution of Jews in Germany. A visit here allows you to reflect on the atrocities committed during the war, and get an idea of what it was like for Anne and her family. Also find a museum at the front of the house. A visit early in the morning will save you waiting in length queues.

Go to an Amsterdam Market

While in Amsterdam, ditch the malls and venture into one of the many markets that you will find within the city. Find everything you can think of here, from books to artifacts and vintage clothes. Experience the local atmosphere and try some local delicacies while putting your bargaining prowess to the test. Waterlooplein flea market and the Lindengracht market are some of the popular Amsterdam markets you can visit.

Ride a Bike

When was the last time you hopped on a bike? Can’t remember? Well, even if you frequently do it, cycling is a part of life in Amsterdam that you should really take part in before you leave. The city has a spectacular network of cycle routes and a flat landscape that well accommodates the more than 800,000 bicycles found there. Riding a bicycle here is not as frustrating as it may be in other cities, where you have to contend with cars. It’s safe, enjoyable and you can get a bike for hire.
