There’s nothing better than fresh, soft laundry, well, almost nothing. That feeling of getting into bed with fresh linen is just priceless. And the smell of those baby clothes and towels as they pop out the dryer is to die for. But did you know that some of these softeners and scents are, in fact, toxic! That’s right, toxic! And this is what we are putting onto ourselves and our children. Due to this fact, there has been a massive call for natural alternatives. And while some of these alternatives are slowly becoming available in our stores, they’re not cheap. Keep reading to find out how to naturally and safely soften and freshen your laundry without breaking the bank.
Vinegar makes an incredible fabric softener, probably even better than those store-bought ones. Normal softeners can leave a terrible residue all over inside the washing machine including the lint trap, and even on the fibers of our clothes. Ever wondered why some items become difficult to clean after a while? Yeah, that’s the softener’s fault for clinging to the fibers and holding onto the dirt. Using vinegar will sort out all of these problems. Our clothes and machines will both be cleaner. Worried about the smell? The smell of vinegar dissipates while it dries, but adding some essential oils can add some extra freshness. Use a ¼ cup vinegar on its own and add it as you normally would to the softener section of the machine or to a softener ball. For scented softener, use 16 ounces of vinegar and 20 – 30 drops of essential oil. Store it in a glass bottle and Shake well before every use to thoroughly mix the oils.
All-natural dryer balls made from wool are the perfect dryer companion and are gaining popularity very quickly. They reduce static from the dryer and add extra softness to the clothes by helping the fibers to plump out. Add a few drops of essential oil to these balls if there is a specific scent that you just can’t bear to live without. Be careful not to overdo it with the oils as the residue could be left on the clothing.
A glass jar, about 20 clean sheets of natural bamboo cotton flannel, and 20 to 30 drops of essential oil are all that’s needed to make the perfect dryer sheets. Place the flannels into the jar, add the oil, and let it stand open for a day until the oils have dried. Pop in one or two flannels to each drying load and you’re good to go. These are reusable over and over again. When the scent fades simply start the process all over again.
Those who are going natural for softeners are more than likely using all-natural detergents as well. These natural detergents are often fragrance-free. Using a scent booster is a great way to keep the laundry smelling great. Use one to two cups of Epsom salts with 20 to 30 drops of essential oils and store in a glass jar. To use, add one tablespoon to the washer drum before the clothes and then wash normally. It’s that easy.
These tips are so affordable and simple, there’s no excuse not to use them today.
