Jackie Kennedy's most iconic looks

As well as being the First Lady of the United States between January 1961 and November 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis or Jackie Kennedy as she is better known was many other things besides. She was a book editor, a mother, a socialite, and a rather stylish lady. Here are some of her most iconic looks.

The wedding dress

The couple got married in 1953 and Jackie looked stunning in a boat neck dress with a full 50’s ball gown skirt and epic veil. The ruffled detailing on the skirt was exquisite, and the neckline really complimented her shape. Beautiful!

The silk dress and white gloves

One of Jackie’s most feminine and classy pieces, she wore an apricot silk dress while visiting Udaipur in India. The waist bow and matching purse were gorgeous details, and the pearls and white gloves were extra chic.

The red two-piece

With her iconic, immaculate brown bob and a triple string of pearls, one of Jackie’s most familiar looks was the red two-piece she wore a part of a tour of the White House which was televised in 1962. Elegant with statement buttons that show she means business!

Patterned shift dresses

A fun patterned shift dress was a regular in Jackie’s wardrobe. She has many different shades and motifs, and they were in a shape that really flattered her. A pair of short white gloves and matching purse usually finished off the look, like with the green and white shift dress she wore at the Taj Mahal in 1962.

The short-sleeve ivory evening gown

The night before JFK’s inauguration, Jackie wore a beautiful silk satin evening gown designed by Oleg Cassini who was known for designing clothes for Grace Kelly and Shirley Temple – so she was in good company! In fact, this gown was voted as one of the 50 dresses that changed the world by the Design Museum in London in 2009.

The coatdress and pillbox hat

When JFK was sworn in on January 20th, 1961, Jackie was bang on trend in an elegant beige coat dress (again, designed by Cassini, known as her Secretary of Style!), elbow-length white gloves and a stunning Halston pillbox hat. The whole look screamed Hollywood glamour.

Strapless Christian Dior Gown

To a dinner honoring André Malraux, who was France’s Minister of Cultural Affairs at the time, Jackie rocked a strapless, pink, Christian Dior dress. She accessorized with a small gold clutch, fabulous dangling earrings and of course her signature elbow-length white gloves.

Pink and white lace dress

When in Paris, fashion is critical, and when the pair visited then-president Charles de Gaulle and his wife, Yvonne for dinner at the Elysée Palace in 1961, Jackie wore an intricate raffia lace dress. The dress came with a matching stole, both with a sophisticated scalloped hem, designed by Cassini, of course.
If you want to channel your own Jackie Kennedy, it’s all about the elegance and poise. Pair your outfits with strings of pearls and elbow-length gloves and sport a serene smile too!
