How to wind down and clear your head before going to bed

There’s nothing like a great night’s sleep to help you recharge after a long day. When you wake up in the morning, you want to feel well rested and ready to go, but you can only do that if you get enough shut-eye the night before. Of course, that’s sometimes easier said than done. If there’s too much going on in your head when you’re trying to sleep, you’ll never be able to drift off. So, how do you clear your mind and assure that you’ll get the rest you need?

Take some deep breaths

Deep breathing is often recommended for anyone who needs to relax and wind down, especially when they’re stressed. It’s a great way to focus your mind on the simple act of breathing and nothing else, allowing you to push away anything that might be getting you down. Just spend ten minutes doing the exercise, making sure to bring your brain back to the job at hand whenever it starts to wander off. Once the time is up, getting to sleep should be no hassle at all.

Have a hot bath

How many times have you ran yourself a hot bath and found you’ve drifted off before you’ve made it out of the water? It happens pretty often because the water raises your body temperature and triggers the need to sleep. Not only will it leave you feeling tired, but it will also relax your whole body and help you de-stress. Plus, if you’re someone that likes to reflect on things when they’re falling asleep, the bath provides an excellent alternative. That way your mind is clear once you go to bed.

Go to your happy place

The reason people are often unable to wind down and relax before bed is because their minds are too preoccupied. Maybe you’ve had a stressful day, or there’s just a lot that you’re worried about. Whatever it is, it’s essential to banish these bad thoughts before you fall asleep; otherwise, they’ll worm their way into your dreams. That’s why you should spend some time imagining a place that always makes you feel happy. Try to think about as many details as possible, from the sights to the smells, and your head should clear up in no time.

Just do nothing

Sometimes, the best way to wind down before bed is by doing nothing. Set yourself a block of time that’s devoted entirely to relaxing and you’ll be amazed by the benefits it will bring you. We’re often so preoccupied with stimulating activities throughout the day that we never allow ourselves a chance to sit back and do nothing. That means no checking your phone or anything like that – just lie down, breathe, and prepare for a great night’s sleep.

No matter what you might think, you’re never at your best if you haven’t slept well. That’s why you should always take some time to wind down, even if it seems like an inconvenience. You’ll be hugely grateful for it come the morning.
