When is it time to move on from a relationship?

Most of us spend our whole lives dreaming of the perfect relationship. We envisage a scenario where we’re laughing and joking with a significant other in the beautiful house, with kids running in between our legs, and pancakes cooking on the stove. Of course, most of these perfect images have come from movies, who rarely show real depictions of a real relationship. Everyday people know that relationships can be hard work. They require patience, compromise, and sometimes even a bit of sacrifice – but it’s almost always worth it to be with the one you love. But what happens if you think the spark has gone?

When the little annoyances become so much more

Let’s be honest; nobody is perfect. Everyone has their own little quirks and their own little ways of doing things, and these are things that you just need to accept from your partner. You never know, you might even find them cute! However, as time goes on, you might find that these start to become tiresome and irritating. If this becomes progressively worse over time, you might want to think about moving on. Those quirks make up a person, and it doesn’t do well to resent certain aspects of their life.

When they are giving mixed signals

A relationship is a two-way street, but it helps if you’re both in the same car, driving in the same direction. In the ideal world, you’ll both have the same wants and desires in life. You might want marriage and kids, or you may want to travel the world and live a simple life. Yet, if you find that you are getting mixed signals and wondering whether they do want the same things as you, you might want to take a step back and really look at your relationship. Is it going to progress in the direction you want? Is it not? If it’s not, it may be time to walk away.

When you are more unhappy than happy

Being in a relationship is supposed to fill you with joy. You should be excited to see your partner, and you should feel completely comfortable and confident in your relationship. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. If your partner has cheated on you, or if you’ve just grown apart, then you may feel unhappy in their company and in a relationship with them. If this is the case, there’s no point staying with them. It’s important for both of you to be happy, and walking away may be the only way to ensure that you both keep a smile on your face.

When they ask you to change

At the end of the day, you should never change for anyone. You are your own person, and you need to find someone who loves you for you. If they don’t, and they ask you to change, then it’s time to question your relationship. You need to work out if the relationship is right for you, because you don’t want to sacrifice too much.
If you’re questioning your relationship, it might be time to wonder whether it’s time to move on.
