No matter how successful, talented, or famous these celebrity moms and dads may seem to their beloved fans, to their kids they are still just ordinary, ‘un-cool,’ and at times incredibly embarrassing parents.
No more hugs
Even the Princess of Pop herself isn’t cool enough for her kids. Britney Spears’ sons, Jayden and Sean Federline, 12 and 13, are apparently not fans of getting a kiss or hug goodbye from mom anymore, especially if their friends are around.
The singer recently admitted that her boys are “just now getting to the stage where you can’t kiss mommy in front of your friends and all that kind of stuff. They’re getting what’s cool and what’s not.”
Everyone gets a lift
Kate Beckinsale and her ex Michael Sheen are an excellent example of how people can remain close despite the relationship ending. They had a daughter together, Lily, who’s now 20. When they found out she got into college, dad Michael gave lifts and hugs to everyone and anyone within reach.
Of course, Kate immortalized the whole thing for posterity and added a caption to boot. That’s not it, though – during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she revealed that Lily had a crush on the late night host – while her daughter was sitting right there, mortified!
Despite Johnny Depp being one of the most famous A-listers around with an array of iconic movie roles, his daughter, 20-year-old model and actress Lily-Rose, is not as impressed.
Although the acting father-daughter duo have a great relationship, Depp claimed in an interview that his daughter feels uncomfortable with some of his more eccentric and goofy on-screen characters, and that she no longer likes to help him prep for movies. “She was probably too embarrassed to help me with another character,” Depp said. “She thinks I’m weird.”
Stuck in the middle
Mark Wahlberg may seem like a pretty cool dad, but his 16-year-old daughter Ella would probably beg to differ. While the Wahlberg family were at a Lakers game in 2015, the actor shared a kiss with his wife Rhea.
The couple’s teen daughter probably would have been okay with it if it wasn’t for the fact that she was stuck sitting right in between them. Mark, noticing his daughter’s obvious embarrassment, then proceeded give her a peck on the cheek in front of everyone.
Reese Witherspoon may seem like one of the most adorable and down-to-earth celebrity moms out there to us, but her kids apparently see things a bit differently. Her oldest, 20-year-old Ava Phillippe, seems to have the biggest issue with her mom’s ‘un-coolness’ factor.
On an interview with Today, Reese admitted that her teenage daughter is often making fun of her for using acronyms while texting such as LOL or BRB. “Ava’s like, ‘Oh my God, you have got to stop,'” she said.
Brooklyn Beckham may have one of the most famous athlete dads in the world, but that doesn’t mean he finds his dad as cool as his fans do. In fact, the 20-year-old model was so embarrassed of his dad as a teen that he used to have him park around the corner when he dropped him off at school – although Dad would later shout “I love you!” as he drove by.
The soccer star even occasionally ‘stalks’ his son’s Instagram posts, such as the time he called him out for skipping school during one of Brooklyn’s live videos.
Not a fan
Anyone who appreciates tunes of the ’80s knows how sweet Lionel Richie’s dance moves were. However, his daughter Nicole Richie is less of a fan of her dad’s moves, and would rather forget that he was ever part of the ’80s music scene.
She once told ET, “It’s just very uncomfortable for me. I’m just not really feeling it. I just get so embarrassed. My sister and I were standing next to each other, and we were like, ‘Someone tell him to stop dancing.’”
Got the moves like Jagger
In our minds, rock stars like The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger are almost not even human, in a sense. We mean, how can you be a rock star and live a rock star’s life for the better part of six decades and still be a normal human who does normal human things?
It just doesn’t make sense. Well, once again we have social media to thank for bursting our bubble. Mick Jagger may be the epitome of cool, but we now know he also leaves horrendously dorky comments on his son Lucas’ social media.
Sick of Twilight
During the height of the Twilight Saga obsession, Peter Facinelli, who plays Edward Cullen’s vampire doctor dad Carlisle Cullen, was one of the most beloved people in Hollywood. However, his oldest daughter Luca, who is now 22, found her dad’s popular role nothing but a burden.
Facinelli’s ex-wife, and Luca’s mother, Jennie Garth revealed to Parade how their daughter really felt at the time. “She’s more embarrassed by it, actually. She’s like, ‘Let’s not talk anything Twilight.’ She’s a little embarrassed by it, she wants people to like her for her and not because of him.”
One of the girls
Anyone who is familiar with the Kardashians knows all about how embarrassing the family’s matriarch and “Momager” Kris Jenner can be at times. Over the years, Kris has been known to humiliate her kids while trying to seem ‘cool.’
For example, the time that she danced with her daughters’ friends wearing giant chains around her neck. Or when she told Khloe that her new bangs looked ‘bangin’ or when she insisted on taking a risque selfie with her daughters.
Leslie Mann and producer husband Judd Apatow’s daughters Iris and Maude, 16 and 21, have each followed in their parent’s Hollywood footsteps. However, they still tend to get embarrassed by their parents every now and then, especially by their mom.
When the sibling duo posted a photo on Instagram of themselves all made up, their actress mom was quick to put in some honest criticism writing, “Under eye concealer too light,” before adding a kiss emoji. To this, Iris hilariously hit back, “A text would’ve been great.”
How Lowe can you go?
For a time in the 1980s, Rob Lowe was probably one of the coolest movie stars populating that decade’s Young Hollywood. It’s now 2019, however, and Lowe is 55 and has two kids. The youngest of the two, Johnny, seems to be perpetually embarrassed by his dad.
Well, either that or he just really enjoys picking on him, because he comments on almost every single photo his dad uploads to social media to voice his displeasure with his artistic – and life – choices. Take this one for example. Cool post-workout pic or Emmy nom brag? We know what Johnny thinks.
Dakota Johnson and Melanie Griffith are always supportive of each other’s work in the business. They are so close, in fact, that they often show up to red-carpet events together, such as the 2015 Oscars.
Unfortunately, Johnson quickly regretted bringing her mom along, especially after Griffith embarrassingly admitted during an interview that she never saw her daughter’s hit film Fifty Shades of Grey saying that she didn’t need to see “that” to know how good of an actress she is.
Some dads just can’t help but embarrass their children, even if they don’t realize it at the time. During the 2013 Oscars Jamie Foxx’s daughter Corinne Bishop, who was 19 at the time, attended the star-studded event with her father.
All was well until the actor started flirting with singer Kelly Rowland when she stopped him for a quick red-carpet interview, with his daughter standing uncomfortably beside him. Her face during the awkward situation certainly said it all!
David Hasselhoff’s daughters Hayley and Taylor, now 27 and 29, were embarrassed to say the least after a video they took of their Baywatch star eating a hamburger while laying on the floor intoxicated was leaked.
The clip was initially taken as part of a future intervention plan, but was instead leaked onto the Internet and the family faced public embarrassment, especially his daughters who claimed to be both mortified of their dad’s behavior and problem with drinking, which they had hoped to keep private.
Courteney Cox’s 15-year-old daughter Coco may be close with her famous Friends star mom, but she also has a tendency to get embarrassed by some of the things she says.
For example, the time the actress blabbered on about her daughter’s former obsession with Barbie dolls during an interview, which resulted in Coco tossing out all of her Barbies in embarrassment. “She got really upset…and embarrassed. All of a sudden, Barbies were not cool,” Cox said.
Technology is great for many reasons, but none of them have to do with dads being able to embarrass their kids before the entire world. And when it’s celebrity dads, like Ryan Reynolds, the audience is multiplied tenfold.
When his eldest daughter, 2-year-old Inez, was just six months old, he shared with the entire world through the magic of social media that she had completed her first drawing. Since it was garbage, though (his words, obviously), he just threw it in the trash. Well, at least she’ll have plenty of evidence to show her shrink when the time comes!
Madonna may be the Queen of Pop, but that doesn’t stop her daughter, 22-year-old model Lourdes Leon, from feeling ashamed of some of her mother’s choices.
Although Madonna has been making bold statements and stirring controversy with her risque song lyrics and fashion style for decades, Lourdes, her oldest, is not always on board. In fact, in an interview with Today, the singer admitted that her daughter is “horrified” by the suggestive nature of her music.
Former supermodel Yolanda Hadid is surely proud of her kids, Gigi, Bella, and Anwar who have each been following in their mother’s footsteps with their own tremendously successful careers as runway stars.
However, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have some cringeworthy mom moments, such as the time she was the loudest in the audience of Gigi and Bella’s 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show or when she irked her daughters by posting embarrassing pictures from when they were toddlers.
As anyone who has ever seen the 1999 cult-comedy American Pie knows, Eugene Levy starred in one of the most famous scenes of the film which involved him walking in on his son – played by Jason Biggs – getting intimate with an actual pie.
Although the movie may have been a mega hit at the time, Levy’s real life son Dan, who was a teen when it came out, was mortified by his dad’s role. “Having that movie come out while I was in high school, I got a lot of idiots saying, ‘Ooh. Is that a story about your life?'” Dan once confessed in an interview.
Too much affection
Will Smith certainly seems to have a great relationship with his family. With that said, Smith also is known for embarrassing his kids, especially his younger son Jaden.
Although the 21-year-old is all grown up with a budding music career of his own, the proud dad can’t help but show his affection to his son in public. Jaden admitted how embarrassing his dad’s frequent hugs and kisses can be. “I appreciate the love, but there’s a time and place to kiss somebody,” he said.
During an interview with GQ, country icon Billy Ray Cyrus made some claims that were sure to embarrass his daughter and former Hannah Montana co-star Miley Cyrus.
According to him, starring in the wholesome and widely popular Disney Channel show alongside his daughter actually “destroyed” his family. At one point, he even made the bizarre claim that him and his family were under siege of the devil, and that the Cyruses’ life was getting “ruined” by evil forces…
Crossing the line
When Jessica Simpson’s career was starting to heat up in 2004, her dad, Joe Simpson, always made sure to let interviewers know just how proud he was of his pop star daughter. However, there were times that her father’s praise went a bit over the top.
When speaking to GQ, the music manager father went on and on about not only his daughter’s talent, but her good looks, making some comments about her figure that were super awkward to say the least.
When Pamela Anderson’s sons Dylan and Brandon, now 21 and 23, were young teens, she let her kids watch her cameo in 2006’s Borat. However, before she did that, she decided it was time to come clean about “the” video of her and her ex, their father, Tommy Lee.
“I just said, ‘Look, Mommy and Daddy were massively in love, we videotaped everything, and you’re probably going to hear about something at school,'” she recalled. We can imagine that this was one uncomfortable conversation to say the least.
Having a dad as musically talented and naturally cool as Lenny Kravitz seems like a dream come true. However, watching Katy Perry awkwardly dance with your dad on stage at the Super Bowl or witnessing an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction of his go viral can be slightly uncomfortable.
Luckily, Kravitz’s daughter Zoe was able to find some humor in it on social media, no matter how humiliating the whole thing must have been for her.
Despite Adam Sandler’s impressive acting credits, he still isn’t seen as the coolest of dads to his children Sunny, 10, and Sadie, 13. They especially tend to be judgmental of his style choices.
He explained, “I wear shorts a lot. And my kids do ask me to put pants on when I go to school. They ask, ‘Could you just one time wear pants?’ And every time I get out of the car, I look down and I go, ‘I got those shorts on! Who’s gonna yell at me?’”
Comedian Kevin Hart seems to take his humor with him wherever he goes, even at home. Unfortunately, his kids, especially the older Heaven, 14, and Hendrix, 11, don’t always find dad’s jokes so funny.
“Oh, when I get home from the gym, I wipe off all my sweat on them,” Hart revealed to GQ. “I wipe whatever sweat. When I get home from the gym, if my kids are home, they run, because I just hug them and wipe all the gym sweat off.”
A royal embarrassment
Just because Prince Charles has been heir to the United Kingdom’s throne for his entire life doesn’t mean that he’s completely immune to being an embarrassing dad. Quite the opposite, in fact, if you ask sons William and Harry.
Speaking candidly to British comedy duo Ant and Dec, the royal duo revealed how their dad used to embarrass them in their school days. One particular instance that stuck in William’s mind had to do with the stage lights and effects going a little haywire during a school play, and Charles absolutely losing it laughing.
