Traveling on public transport sometimes isn’t the nicest of experiences, but it’s often necessary to get to wherever it is we’re trying to go. However, the experience is sometimes made all the more horrifying by members of the public who don’t seem to care about personal space or hygiene.
It’s one thing to be caught out and told off by a regular member of the public, but to be caught out by a famous comedian is absolutely mortifying. However, it seems as if this guy wasn’t actually getting the message, despite several people making it clear.
While Andy Richter may have made a career out of fun and laughter, and by being a longtime support for Conan O’Brien, he certainly wasn’t laughing at anything this time.
A terrible passenger
The man that Andy Richter was witnessing was putting his dirty, bare feet onto the TV screen that was on the seat in front of him. This wasn’t just irritating for the person who was sitting in the chair in front of him, feeling every movement his toes made, but the people around him were also pretty disgusted.
The passengers either side of him had to have visibly dirty feet get closer to them as they were raised from the ground. Richter got pretty fed up with this guy who was taking unhygienic liberties and disturbing the people around him.
He decided to take action
It was pretty frustrating to see, and it would have been awkward for anyone sitting next to this guy to complain. Especially since they would be potentially spending the rest of the flight next to him. Richter decided he’d had enough and he was going to tell the flight attendant.
Once the flight attendant had asked the man to put his feet down, it wasn’t long before he returned them back into their original position. For some reason, this guy felt comfortable having both bare feet up around the screen.
He had to ask for himself
Andy had already approached a flight attendant, and he wasn’t about to go up and get another one on account of this guy. After noticing that he had put his feet up despite being asked to put them down and be considerate, he turned to his own devices.
He asked the man himself to put his feet down. He pleaded with him, explaining those are his bare feet, which should have been explanation enough for anyone. This took the man by surprise, and he put them down, maintaining his shocked expression.
The man put his feet back up
At this point, anyone would be getting enraged. The man seemed to be following through with people’s requests to put his feet down, but only to momentarily placate them before returning them back to their original position.
That’s when Andy Richter decided he was going to take to the internet. If it weren’t for the fact that this guy had already been told several times, he would have kept it to himself, but this guy was infuriatingly rude.
They had to get off the plane
Everyone had to prematurely get off the plane as a result of the torrential weather and lightning. This wasn’t of much consequence to Richter, who noticed something on his way off the plane. He couldn’t help but notice the guy’s screen, and the apparent dirt marks.
It was physical evidence that showed just how unhygienic this man’s feet were and the perfect example of why people should keep their feet covered and off public furniture. This guy just wasn’t getting it.
The flight attendant returned
Just before everyone had to get off the plane, the flight attendant asked the barefoot guy yet again if he could remove his feet from the seat. The man seemed genuinely confused about the whole situation and questioned the flight attendant about it.
He asked if having your feet up is allowed only while you’re in a taxi, which is really quite an odd thing to ask. The flight attendant had the perfect response, explaining it’s about basic courtesy more than anything else.
He even made a dog feel uncomfortable
Let’s be honest, there’s almost nothing worse than making a good boy feel uncomfortable. The fact that this dog even knew that what this guy was doing was pretty silly tells you everything you need to know.
However, it’s pretty funny that Richter caught this curious dog’s expression while this was all going down. While that man might have been being uncooperative, at least they had something to laugh about. Just look at how this dog is clearly giving him a look of shame.
He just didn’t seem to get it
The guy just didn’t seem to understand why people wanted him to take his feet down. People couldn’t believe why this guy seemed to feel like he could take his shoes and socks off and place his dirty feet on to the screen in front.
Even though he was asked several times, the man didn’t understand, and he kept replacing his feet. Most people would probably feel embarrassed after being asked once or twice to remove their feet, but this guy didn’t seem bothered at all.
People need their space
Most people who have to use public transport know that the person next to them probably wants their own space. In fact, it’s a common courtesy just to make sure that you’re not causing anyone else problems around you.
If you were sitting on a bus, it would be pretty strange seeing someone with their feet on the seat in front of them. However, since it was a flight, people feel as if they can make themselves at home, sometimes regardless of who is sitting next to them.
Thinking of others
The man was only thinking of his own comfort, rather than thinking of the other passengers around him. When we use public transport, whether it’s a train, a bus, or an airplane, we wouldn’t like to sit in a dirty seat.
So it’s important to keep fellow and future passengers in mind, rather than making the experience difficult. If that means keeping your feet firmly planted on the floor, then that’s what we have to do. However, this guy seemed not to be too bothered.
We all have to do it
It’s something we’re all told we have to do. Including famous people, after all, Andy Richter was on the same flight as the guy putting his dirty feet up on the seat. He could have felt that he could take advantage of his surroundings and just pay for it later.
However, even a famous comedian didn’t do that and, instead, kept his hands and feet to himself. He couldn’t understand what would compel some people to put their feet on the screen of an airplane.
Standing up for fellow passengers
It takes a lot of courage to stand up to someone. Many people worry about causing a fuss and a problem; however, there are a few who are more than happy to say things when other people don’t feel they can.
Andy Richter could see that other people were feeling visibly uncomfortable next to this guy, and he wasn’t paying any attention. As he knew they would let this man get away with it, he felt he had to step in, especially after the man ignored the flight attendant.
What about the man himself?
What they hadn’t considered is what was going through this man’s mind while he was putting his feet on the computer screen. The man seemed genuinely not to understand why people didn’t put their feet on the seats in front of him.
He might have never been on a flight before, and have always been allowed to put his feet up wherever he went. Most of us learn manners from our parents or guardians, so perhaps this man had not been fortunate enough to have people there to show him.
Having a bad day
Alternatively, his legs could have been hurting, or he could have been having a bad day. Sometimes we all want to put our feet up and relax, and most people know how tough that is while on a flight.
It could have been a more comfortable position for him to sit in, after all, they do say that you need to exercise your legs while flying. So he could have felt as if he was doing the right thing, even if that was making other people feel uncomfortable.
No one’s business
From his perspective, he paid for his seat on the flight, so maybe he also thinks he is entitled to use that to its fullest extent. The only trouble is, he is putting his feet on the back of someone else’s chair by doing that.
He was also placing his feet on something that isn’t designed for feet. These are all practices that we all know and follow, yet don’t tend to be explicitly stated anywhere. Most people don’t think it is necessary and we can’t warn people about everything.
People don’t always say something
If Andy Richter weren’t there, then the passengers sat next to the man would have probably endured his feet the entire flight. However, other people have already had to deal with this on other flights, where fellow passengers have felt the need to whip out their dirty feet.
So, while it shouldn’t be something you witness on every flight, it doesn’t appear that the guy on Richter’s flight was the only one. In fact, a whole host of people have experienced feeling uncomfortable by someone else’s exposed feet.
Having the courage
Let’s be honest, most of us would probably just choose to ignore the person and try and get through our flight. If we had these feet above our seat, we might try to decide not to confront the person and cause an argument.
It’s awkward and annoying having to catch public transport and deal with someone else’s feet. However, things can get even more uncomfortable if the person then refuses to stop. Andy Richter wasn’t worried, but then he wasn’t sitting right next to the guy.
It can be unnerving
It’s not the easiest of things, either. After all, the person already feels as if it’s okay to prop their feet somewhere they shouldn’t, so why should they care if someone asks them to stop? Really, it’s taking a real chance.
All kinds of strange things happen while on planes, whether it’s being sat next to someone who is happy to get their bare feet out, or if you also happen to witness a famous comedian telling this person off. Who knows which one is wilder?
Should they be left alone?
It also raises the question as to whether we should just let people do what they want. After all, he did pay for the seat, does that mean he should be able to take his socks off and rest his bare feet on the screen?
He wasn’t penalized in any way other than being told off. However, there were no real consequences to his actions. Does that mean that flight staff aren’t too bothered about the whole thing, or that they know they can’t really kick a passenger off for it?
People were pleased
Of course, once Andy Richter posted his experience online, people were commenting on it with their own opinions. Most people were pretty pleased that he was able to say something to the guy, believing it was wrong he put his feet up.
Many felt the man may have just been somewhat uneducated since he didn’t seem to realize the impact of what he was doing and why he was being asked to stop. It sure was a strange one.
Hopefully, it won’t happen again
We know that sometime, somewhere, someone is going to strike again. Whether it’s with their dirty, bare feet, or with awful candy wrappers on the floor. Unfortunately, every flight won’t have Andy Richter on there to help save the day.
At least, if he is on the flight, people might think twice now knowing that he is more than happy to share the story online with his many followers. We don’t know what happened to the guy after that, but he’s going to get a shock when he goes online.
